The automobile industry is a cutthroat business. You need to constantly offer new car design and innovation. That is why Oldsmobile is truly proud of being one of the oldest surviving auto brands in the United States. Before GM stopped its production in 2004, Oldsmobile was able to produce some of the most beloved car in America. The Oldsmobile 442 is one of them. The 442 is an answer to the Pontiac Tempest GTO, which at time the leading competition of Oldsmobile. This muscle car was launched as an alternative for the F-85 and Cutlass models in 1964. In 1968 it became a separate brand. Proving to be an excellent muscle car, the Oldsmobile 442’s large cubic-displacement engine came with exceptional body features and excellent handling components. It was ranked among the most balanced intermediate sized muscle cars. For the next years, the 442 has undergone major changes which are both advantageous and disadvantageous to the brand. In 1966 it received a longer muscular look by means of the latest sheet metal material. Then came the powerful W-30, followed by the introduction of the 400 ci rocker powered V8. The V8 was able to give the 442 a 360hp speed with the first cold air induction system. From then on, it just got better for the 442. Between 1968 and 1969, the Oldsmobile 442 received a facelift with its hood, front and rear lighting arrangements, headlights, and grille assemblies. Although the body is still patterned after the GM A-body, the 442 dropped 3 inches of its wheelbase. The 400ci V8 was joined by the smaller block of 350ci. The only change was the location of the forced air induction system. It was now located underneath the front bumper. In 1971, the government came up with regulations that mandate the use of unleaded fuel. The compression ratios and horsepower ratings were forcefully lowered by these regulations. It ended the muscle car era. With these changes, came more design revision for the 442. A new grille design and somewhat different tail lights was introduced. But in 1972, the 442 would go back to its standard model, becoming an option to the Cutlass models once more. After 1972, the Oldsmobile completely backed out of the muscle car market. For years the Oldsmobile 442 was praised by car enthusiasts as one of the greatest muscle cars to come out of the factory. It has become a favorite collection piece for car connoisseurs. This classic car has truly become a hot item nowadays. If you are a proud owner of this baby, Parts Train is glad to inform you that we carry genuine replacement parts for your Oldsmobile 442.
