Nissan is one of the three Japanese automobile giants that were able to penetrate the competitive American car market. But before it became a household name in the United States and other countries, Nissan was known in the export market under the brand name of Datsun. Because of the popularity of the sports car series, Nissan introduced its own sports car through the Nissan 260 (Datsun 260) in 1974. It was widely known as the Fairlady Z in Japan and as 260Z in other foreign markets.

Nissan is well-known in its engineering expertise. The Nissan 260 has a 4-cylinder engine that produced 150 hp and equipped by a five-speed manual transmission. The model manufactured in the US was fitted with a lesser four-speed engine transmission. It has an enlarged engine stroke of 2.6 L. compared to the earlier 240 model, and has an 11.9” extra wheelbase. Because an independent suspension was used, the car was fitted with Chapman struts on the rear and MacPherson struts on the front. Like every other car, it uses a front disc brake and rear drums.

Early models of the Nissan 260 have carburetors that were hard to tune. This can be attributed to the use of twin carburetors that were one-barrel side-draft SU-like. Although the carburetors were changed on the 1973 models, the previous models were still considered to be higher performing. The change was initiated to comply with regulations regarding emission control.

The success of the Nissan 260 in the United States can be attributed to its affordable pricing. It was the first successful business venture for Nissan in North America. Jaguar and Porsche was lording the sports car market at that time. The entry of the 260 leveled the playing field. The success of the car in terms of sales was easily translated to the race tracks during the 70s. The high powered and brilliant design of the 260 earned it the second spot on the Top Sports Cars of the 1970s list.
