The Nissan 240 is one of the first popular Japanese sports cars in Nissan’s Z lineup introduced in America late 1969. It was designed to perform like that of a sports car by the president of Nissan America but was priced as an economy car.
Performing like a Porsche car, this model is still a highly sought vehicle by so many enthusiasts. It was said that there were people who tried to find the first 500 240s that were made and sold before. The 240 model is one of those cars which you can sell more than you paid for in the future.
Datsun then probably did not know that their new 240 car would become popular, according to some research the first five cars were crash tested by them; this might not have been a big deal for them before. Along the 500 first cars, they were only able to discover 74 of it up to date. The rest of it was never found for who knows what reasons.
The 240Z is a breakthrough for the Japanese manufacturers, they have been trying to compete with the European and Western makers and this model with its quality, performance, and sheer look beat them all. Actually, being desirable and all, the 240z would have been bought or paid more by the buyers if it was priced higher than how it was bargained that time.
The Datsun 240Z is a two-seat coupe, having the McPherson strut front suspension similar to that of Datsun’s 1800 sedan, the rear suspension was a Chapman strut design, and the engine was that of the 510 sedan’s 1.6 litre OHC four with two more cylinders making it act like having a 2.4 litre SOHC straight six with dual SU-like carburetors. It was backed up by the familiar 4 speed manual transmission.
Though the derivatives of the exterior were somewhat taken from other makes models, the 240Z was immensely attractive and was known to be decently quick for the era having a 150 horsepower and pushing just 2,320 pounds. In the interiors, it was clean considering the high-back bucket seats and the instrumentation was deeply tunneled into the dash but assured of no great shakes.
Nissan decided to maintain the original equipments and looks of the Datsun 240 for all the years of its production. The best part of this is that, even if there were no changes at all, sales continuously doubled every year. If not because of the new bumper regulation needed and the emissions regulations threatening at the same time, the company had to make a few alterations thus the end of the 240Z and was replaced by the 260Z.
The memory of the 240Z remains fresh for the collectors and the automotive enthusiasts alike. A lot of them are still looking forward finding and being able to own one.
