Everyone loves a luxury vehicle. Mercury is Ford’s answer to the clamor for a high-performing car that is affordable yet exudes luxury. Mercury models are best known for their performance. So it was no question that when Ford Motor Company started getting in on the near-luxury car market in 1939, it will open the door for one of the most-loved classic car, the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser.

Mercury had its glory days in the 1950s. It was during this decade when it started manufacturing the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser, considered to be the brand’s first-class model. The car was launched in 1957 and offered a unique styling and wide assortment of gadgets. The car was available in two door or four door hardtop body styles. Ventilation can be controlled by means of a power rear window. The car’s upper corner windshields were equipped with “twin jet” air intakes. To make it stand out from other Mercury models, the vehicle’s rear fin was fitted with a gold anodized trim strip.

Mercury started to improve on car engineering and design as time passed. More innovations were introduced to cater to the changing demands of the consumers. Later in 1957, the company added a new model to the Turnpike Cruiser series. During this time, the car designs are gearing towards a “junior Lincoln” style, than staying as “gussied up” Ford. It was crucial to be known as a luxury vehicle to create more sales throughout the country. Initially, the Convertible Cruiser was to be used for racing for the 1957 Indianapolis 500. But its success on the race track translated to manufacturing of production models as well. The car carried the yellow Sun Glitter paint and boast of a continental tire kit, which is comparable to the original race car.

Changes continued until 1958 for the Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. Minor trim changes were done on the car, while still offering its most distinguished feature – the retractable rear window. This feature was carried on by the company in the subsequent car designs after production of the Turnpike Cruiser was stopped in 1959.
