When you mention the brand MG the first thing that comes to mind is sports car. But MG is not limited to manufacturing two-door sports car. The company has also earned recognition in manufacturing midsize cars. The MG ZB comes to mind when you mention four-door saloons, manufactured by the company during its early years. Saloon is the British term for sedan. Compared to sports car, saloons are more passenger and luggage oriented. They are more spacious and provide adequate room for passenger than what sports car can offer.

The MG ZB was part of the Magnette series that also include the ZA. It was manufactured in 1956 as a replacement for the Magnette ZA. The big change is the engine. The compression ratio was increased from 7.15:1 to 8.3:1. To achieve a 68bhp engine output, the car was equipped with a much larger H4 twin carburetors and the inlet and exhaust valves were modified. These major changes in the engine enabled the ZB to perform better than its predecessor.

The manufacturer also gave car owners the option of choosing some of the ZB’s specification. For an added cost, an automatic transmission can be installed. But this did not go well due to the fact that at that time automatic transmission was not as properly engineered as in today’s engine system. Having a standard transmission retro-fitted was a better choice. The ZB Varitone model was fitted with a larger rear window and available in two-tone color scheme. For those with a conservative taste, the car was also available in single color tones.

Because of its heavy body, the MG ZB was never a choice for car races. The engine produces little power. But this did not stop the company from fielding it in selected races. The 60s and 70s saw a successful fielding of ZBs in stock car races. The stability of the car was the main element that brought it success on the track. However, this led to the demise of the MG ZB. It was eventually replaced by the MK III Magnette in 1958. As of today, it is estimated that about a thousand ZB unit still exist.
