In 1920’s the M-Type Midget had been made. This was an inexpensive, basic and fun two-seater which made MG a known manufacturer of sports cars and with an outstanding reputation in motor sport. The production of this small sports car runs through 1961 to 1979. The first version of the Mg Midget was fundamentally a badge engineered version of the Austin Healey Sprite MKII and maintained the quarter elliptic sprung rear axle which came from the original Sprite. The engine used was a 948 cc A-Series having twin SU carburetors cranking out 46 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 53 ft-lbf at 3000 rpm.
Midget MkII was produced from 1964 to 1966 model years. Its doors received wind up windows, external handles, quarter lights and windscreen. Though its hood has been modified it still have removable frame that needs to be erected before the cover was laid. The vehicle’s rear springs were changed into more conservative half elliptical type. Its engine received improved bearings, increasing the power to 59 hp. at 5750 rpm and the torque to 65 lbf-ft at 3500 rpm.
For the Midget MkIII, a new engine was outfitted. This 1275 cc engine produced an output of 65 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 72 ft-lbf at 3000 rpm. This was however, a detuned version of the engine that was employed by the Cooper S. The hood of this Midget version was now attached permanently to the vehicle. In 1969, the body of this vehicle received minor changes with its sills painted with black and a modified black grille. In 1971, the square shaped rear wheels arches were made round. Moreover, the MG Midget came with huge black plastic bumpers in order to meet the US Federal regulations. These so-called rubber bumpers were installed to the front and rear. The ride height of the said vehicle was also significantly increased. The A-Series engine was replaced by a 1493 cc unit.
