Mg MGB was said to be the best-selling British sports car. It was manufactured by British Motor Corporation and was marketed under the MG marque. Launched in May 1962, MGB was offered both in coupe and convertible versions. It replaced the MGA and was produced until October 22, 1980. The time it was introduced, MGB was given a moderately modern design. It made use of a unibody structure reducing both the manufacturing cost and the vehicle’s weight and adding chassis strength. This change was a significant improvement compared to the body-on frame structure that was utilized on MGA and T-type models as well as to its competitor, the Triumph TR Series. This design is comprised of wind-up windows and comfy driver’s compartment.
Both in handling and performance, the Mg MGB outperformed its more costly rivals the time it was introduced. Its performance was efficient, achieving 0 to 60 mph over 11 seconds due mainly to its light weight. Its three bearing 1798 cc B-Series engine cranked out 95 horsepower at 5400 rpm. In October 1964, the said engine was upgraded to a five-bearing crankshaft as an attempt to enhance the vehicle’s reliability. What’s more enticing about this MG model is that it was among the first cars to contain controlled crumple zones intended to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph crash with an immovable barrier.
The first MGB model in the MGB range was the MGB Roadster. It was mainly a two-seater car that was able to accommodate both passenger and luggage well. It also has a softer suspension, leading to a smoother ride. In 1965, a fixed-roof MGB GT was launched featuring a hatchback body that’s Pininfarina-designed. It has a 2+2 design but its rear bench seat was of limited use for older children and for adults. The gearbox and the engine were the same as the ones in the roadster trim. GT’s acceleration is lower compared to the roadster because of its increased weight. MGB GT V8 was also offered.
