The term “Merkur” means Mercury in German language. As expected, the Merkur brand of cars was manufactured by German manufacturers and were sold and serviced by the Ford Motor Corporation. But wait, doesn’t Ford also have another line-up of car named Mercury? Have this not lead into confusion among buyers for the brand of car they’re going to purchase?

Merkur is a brand of automobiles marketed by Ford in the US and Canada in the mid-1980s. Cars in the line-up were manufactured by German manufacturers and Ford marketed and sold it under its Mercury-Lincoln division. In its short history, the company only produced two models, the Merkur XR4Ti and the Merkur Scorpio, both of which have badge engineered Ford versions.

Whether the Merkur brand name brought confusion to Ford buyers, we don’t know. The brand, however, was short lived due to a couple of reasons. Some would attribute the company’s loss to the difficult sounding name. Other explanation of the company’s financial woes includes the odd styling of the Merkur cars and the continuous exchange rate fluctuations between the US and Germany.
