The Tracer was popularly known as Mercury's compact car. It was released in 1987 for model year 1988. Upon its introduction, Ford also launched its Festiva models for the subcompact department to compete with Toyota Tercel and Geo Metro. This model was a rebadged edition of Ford Laser which was marketed already in Australia and Asia.
The 1988 Mercury Topaz was motorized by its standard 1.6 L B6 I4 producing 82 horsepower and 92 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission for both 2-door and 4-door models was 5-speed manual overdrive transmission. Talking about the comfort and convenience features, the 1988 Topaz has an optional air conditioning system and cassette player. After three years overlap with first-generation Tracer, the 1991 model was released. Its Ford twin was the Ford Escort and it was based on the B platform of Mazda 323. For model year 1991, the Tracer LTS was included on the Ten Best list of Car and Driver magazine.
Both the Mercury Tracer and the Ford Escort were updated for model year 1997 but it still remained as Mercury's smallest model. Tracer received a new engine, fresh styling and new interior. The car's wheelbase was not changed and it now gained unique styling touches. When it comes to safety, dual airbags were made standard while antilock brakes were optional. The enhanced dashboard now has in its center an integrated control panel that incorporates the audio and climate controls. The only engine for the third-generation Tracer was a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine cranking out 110 horsepower and mated with 5-speed manual transmission. For 1998 model year, Mercury Tracer received depowered airbags and large center console. Minor changes were also incorporated for 1999 models and these include interior trunk release and standard remote-entry. Then, the production of Tracer was stopped.
