Both the Mercury Tracer and the Ford Escort were updated for model year 1997 but it still remained as Mercury’s smallest model. Tracer received a new engine, fresh styling and new interior. The only engine for the third-generation Tracer was a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine cranking out 110 horsepower and mated with 5-speed manual transmission. For 1998 model year, Mercury Tracer received depowered airbags and large center console. Minor changes were also incorporated for 1999 models and these include interior trunk release and standard remote-entry. Then, the production of Tracer was stopped.
