Being one of Ford Motor Company’s products, the Mercury marque was founded to represent the semi-luxury cars, addressing the need of car enthusiasts for automobiles that offers more than the entry-level Ford models but not as expensive as the luxury Lincoln models. The Mercury was Ford’s competing brand against General Motor’s Buick brand and DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler brand. As early as 1939, Mercury-brand automobiles were already seen running on the roads, and their excellent performance and style were already experienced and enjoyed by a number of Mercury car owners.

In 1971, Ford launched an American compact car called Ford Pinto to serve as a replacement model for the discontinued Ford Cortina. And because lots of Ford cars were popular for having a twin model, the Ford Pinto also had its twin called the Mercury Bobcat. Such twin model was introduced in Canada in 1974, and a year after in United States. The Mercury Bobcat was Ford’s rival product against AMC’s Gremlin, Chevrolet’s Vega, Datsun’s B210, Honda’s Civic, Toyota’s Corolla and Volkswagen’s Beetle. It also paved the way for the upcoming Ford Mustang II. It was offered in three body styles – as a 2-door coupe, as a 2-door station wagon, and as a 3-door hatchback.

Basically, Bobcat’s design was a conventional unibody construction, and had its powerplant positioned longitudinally right at the vehicle’s front portion. It also featured a live axle rear end that is suspended on leaf springs, and a suspension that is made up of unequeal A-arms in terms of length with coil springs at the front. Moreover, its driver and passenger seats are resting on a low-leveled floor.

Available powerplant for the Mercury Bobcat is a 2.3-liter in-line 4-cylinder EAO SOHC engine to boost a maximum of 88 horsepower, and a bigger and more powerful 2.8-liter Cologne V6 engine that is capable of generating 98 horsepower. Available transmissions, on the other hand for this model, are 3-speed automatic and 4-speed manual options. Not only that, it is also loaded with a number of standard features and amenities for a more exciting and pleasurable driving experience. The last units of the Mercury Bobcat that rolled off the factory were only until 1980. It was succeeded by the Ford Escort in the Ford, Mercury division lineup.
