The mission of Mazda, maybe, is to manufacture cars that are unique and one of its kind. This can be seen in the cars that they have manufactured. And it is for this reason why their cars have reached various levels of popularity and recognition throughout the years.
Mazda was founded in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. by Jujiro Matsuda. From manufacturing machine tools, the company shifted to automobile production when they introduced their first vehicle, the three-wheeled Mazda-Go, in 1931. Mazda however was only officially recognized as an automaker in 1960 when they manufactured their first four-wheeled car, the Mazda R380 Coupe. With unique cars equipped with new and unique technologies, Mazda cars have been acclaimed in the US and in other parts of the world. It was in the ‘80s that Ford finally noticed Mazda and decided to include the company as their business and technological partner.
Mazda has been known for their unique cars employing unique technologies. This uniqueness has brought them much good, but there were also some bad aspects in it. By using the Wankel rotary engine and the Miller cycle engine, coupled with their one of a kind body designs, Mazda cars have been praised for innovativeness and had a good following when they were first introduced in the US. The engines were powerful but consume too much fuel, that’s why during the oil crisis, their sales have also been brought down. They have also used a couple of brand names in Japan, with each brand offering an entirely distinct line-up of cars. This move however did them more bad than good, as brand recognition on the part of the consumers became difficult. These problems have caused losses in the company. It was not until the dawn of the new millennium that Mazda was able to recover in its sales and once again started manufacturing cars that are financially successful.
There is a wide line-up of vehicles for Mazda today including the Mazda3, Mazda6, Miata and RX-8. Apart from these, there are still the older Mazda cars that continue to ply the major roads of the US.
