Established in Bologna in 1914, Maserati is a renowned Italian manufacturer of race cars as well as sports cars. It was named Maserati because it was formed by the Maserati brothers: Alfieri Maserati, Bindo Maserati, Ettore Maserati, Ernesto Maserati, and Mario Maserati. Each of them has its own participation in making Maserati celebrated. They have built and designed Maserati vehicles that won races.
The Maserati Spyder is one of their creations. It is a two-seater roadster version of the Maserati Coupe. Actually, the Maserati Coupe and Maserati Spyder were launched at the same time, in 2002. The Maserati Spyder together with the Coupe is equipped with a 4.2-litre that delivers 390 bhp (291 kW). The top speed is 177 miles per hour or 285 km/h whereas the 0.60 time is 4.9 seconds.
The Maserati Spyder, the same with the Maserati Coupe again is offered in two transmissions: GT, a traditional manual or Cambiocorsa wherein upshift and downshift paddles are installed on the steering wheel which is designed and intended to simulate Formula One driving. The Maserati Spyder comes in two seats while the Maserati Coupe has four seats.
Actually, the Maserati Spyder was first revealed to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001. It made its debut in United States in January 2002 at the Detroit Motor Show. Upon its introduction, the Spyder became the first Maserati sold in America since 1990. The Maserati Coupe was unveiled shortly thereafter. The Maserati Spyder is a bit more expensive than the Maserati Coupe.
After having been a part of Ferrari for a few years, Maserati is totally owned by the Italian car giant Fiat today. Parenthetically, the V8 engine of the Maserati Coupe and Maserati Spyder was designed by Ferrari but it was built by Maserati.
