Designer Marcello Gandini, one of the more talented designers of Bertone, designed the elegant Maserati Khamsin in 1972 which replaced the Maserati Indy model. It soon became the rival of the Ferrari Daytona. But it was not until 1974 that the production of Khamsin got started, during the phasing out of the Daytona. Production ended in 1980 with a total of 421 built cars.

The Maserati Khamsin is an elegant 2+2 coupe powered by the powerful and long-proven 49630cc quad cam V8 which can achieve up to 168 mph of car speed. Of course, you have the option to use either automatic or manual transmissions. It was dubbed by devotees as “the last great Maserati grand tourer” and super car. True to its form, Gandini’s design has a lot of attention-grabbing features: a unique asymmetric louvered hood grille (which was later revised for later cars), to help address the cooling issues, a lengthened vent across the rest of the hood is added. It provides great luggage access in a horizontal hatchback. And backing up is so much easier with its rear glass panel. The dimensions of the Maserati Khamsin include a wheelbase of 2550 mm, length of 4400 mm, width of 1804 mm and a height of 1140 mm.

An infamous hydraulically power-assisted Maserati Khamsin makes it possible for a speed-sensitive steering. It possesses an amazing alacrity to self-center while it maintains a light feel. Its brakes, which are also hydraulically assisted, are powered with a 2,500-psi engine driven pump. That is why it has greater sensitivity to pressure.

In 1977, a U.S. version of the Khamsin was imported. But it contains terrible renovations imaginable: ugly black bulges in place of the original svelte bumpers, taillights moved from their distinguishing vertical glass rear panel and exhaust panels. Not only that, the U.S Khamsins showed a poor 140mph top speed at 13 seconds, while the original Maserati Khamsin comes with a respectable 350 lb-ft or torque and 320 hp, for a 168 mph top speed at a six-second 0-60 time.

So before you buy any Khamsin, just make certain that the high pressure accumulator spheres have been recharged for the last 1 decade, and that the recommended LHM is being used by the system.
