In 1914, a famous manufacturer of Italian racing cars and sports cars was established in Bologna—the Maserati. It became a part of Ferrari for some years before it was owned directly by Fiat, an Italian car giant. They have developed a number of racing cars, and in March of 1969, Maserati launched the Maserati Indy at the Salone d’ Automobile de Geneve. The Maserati Indy got its name from the Maserati’s great victories at Indianapolis in 1939 and 1940.
Between 1969 and 1975, total production of Maserati Indy consisted of 1,104 cars (300 4.9 liter cars, 364 4.7 liter cars, and 440 4.2 liter cars). In a long line of traditional formed engine rear wheel drive, the Maserati Indy was one of the last powered by a classic, normally aspirated V8 engine and four overhead camshafts. The four adult passenger-seated Indy made the Maserati Indy stand out from GT, its counter part during 1960’s which has a traditional two plus two formation seats. The production car differed a little bit from the Maserati Indy prototype originally seen at Turin in 1968 due to slight minor changes. But mechanically speaking, there were no changes from the other Maserati V8 engined cars at all. It has a 4136 cc cubic capacity, supplied by four twin-chocked down-draught 42 DCNF Weber carburetors. All these yields 260 bhp at 5500 rpm which give the Indy a 155 mph (250 kph) maximum car speed!
Undoubtedly, the side profile of the Maserati Indy greatly demonstrated the clever design of Vignale. It has an attractive front elevation with a full width slim wrap around front rubber insert bumper, coupled with retractable headlights. But due to its wet sump engine, it lacked the low line of Ghibli though it is attractive. Above a full width rear bumper, the Maserati Indy comes with a full width windowed hatch that surges down to a cut-off tail integrating the presently standard horizontal rear light clusters. A central grille and openings where the exhaust pipes existed is found under the bumper.
Maserati Indy comes with a standard ZF 5-sped gearbox transmission, but a 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic gearbox may be an option. An independent front suspension composed of double wishbones, anti-roll bar, and coil springs; while a live axle on leaf springs sited by a single torque reaction arm controlled by another anti-roll bar can be found on the rear suspension. Although Maserati Indy has an extra weight largely due to its enormous body, it could effortlessly top an amazing155mph! That is why even by today’s standards, Indy is still respectable.
