The first Maserati 228i model has no catalytic converter installed along the exhaust system. But when it is introduce in the United States, the company have added an additional device which is the catalytic converter to be able to pass from emission test to all states it has. After the launch in 1986, the 228i model offered a dual ignition (two spark plugs per cylinder) for more precise engine start and the six valves have a liquid cooled turbocharger.

The Maserati 228i actually has three valves per cylinder with a single overhead camshaft per bank. It has a carburetion supercharge engine with two water cooled IHI turbo-compressors and 1 two barrel Weber carburetor and an additional 2 intercoolers and Weber multi-point electronic injection. The Maserati 228i is a rear wheel drive vehicle with an enhanced independent wheel and McPherson type coil spring suspension system with double action telescopic shock absorbers on the front and independent wheels coil springs with double action telescopic shock absorbers on the rear. Both the real wheel drive and the enhanced suspension system of this vehicle promote better tire traction against the surface of the road.
