A production sports car with a soul of a car on the race track—that best describes Maserati cars. This is so because the classic and original Maserati cars were really race cars. It was only of late that the company has shifted to manufacturing production cars, and recently has once again entered the racing scene.

Maserati is a world-renowned Italian manufacturer of race and sports cars. Alfieri Maserati founded the company in 1914, with his brothers as the engineers of the cars they produce. Five years after the death of Alfieri, the company was sold to the Orsi family. Under the supervision of the Orsi family, the Maserati brand of race cars have been known, as it has produced winning race cars year by year. During the family's supervision, however, the brand was pulled out of the race track and the company concentrated instead on manufacturing production sports cars. In 1968, Maserati was sold to Citroen so that the vehicle would be able to use the engines produced by the said company. Citroen, however, was not able to market the Maserati successfully which led to the near liquidation of the company.

It was Alessandro de Tomaso, in close coordination with the Binelli Company that saved Maserati. From his time, the Maserati brand went to many manufacturer, starting with Chrysler, then with Fiat and finally with Ferrari in 1999. Currently, Maserati is Ferrari's luxury division and has recently entered the racing arena once again.

Current Maserati models include the Coupe, Spyder and Quattroporte. In the racing arena, there is another model in the Maserati Trofeo. Just like the classic and winning Maserati race cars, the current Maserati models, both for the production sports car and the race car, are speedy and capable, carrying with it a rich heritage of quality and performance.
