Mid-seventies was characterized by the growing competition in the European luxury segment of the auto industry, overwhelming success of the Cadillac Seville, rising gasoline prices and car user’s demand for more fuel efficient vehicles. These circumstances encouraged Lincoln to produce its first compact car, the Lincoln Versailles, offered in a four-door sedan from 1977 to 1980. It is based on the Ford Granada platform and had Lincoln’s distinguishing marks, the radiator grille and rear deck tire bulge. It was fully equipped with luxurious components, which made it highly competitive against cars of its class.

Standard to the Versailles are automatic transmission, automatic control air conditioning, automatic brake release, intermittent wipers, remote controlled mirrors, dual lighted visor vanity mirrors, AM/FM radio and more. The Versailles also came with standard power-operated equipments like power steering, four wheel disc brakes, windows and seats. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and carpeted trunk likewise speak nothing else but luxury. Lincoln Versailles was redesigned in 1979 to cater to its user’s exacting choices and wants. The modified Versailles had wider doors, extended roofline (eight inches longer), vinyl-covered deck lid tire bulge and new integrated coach lamps, which generally gave it a more sophisticated look. New to the 1979 model are the coach roof with coach lamps, paint stripes on the bodyside and decklid, halogen headlights, rear seat reading lamps and electronic AM/FM stereo search radio. Former features such as the tinted glass, power steering, 4 wheel disc brakes and windows, wide whitewall steel belted radial tires and illuminated entry system remained standard to the Versailles.

The name Versailles was taken from Ford’s 1966 survey on the consumers’ choice for the upcoming Eldorado fighter model designation. The “Versailles” ranked third after Mark VI and LeMarque. Mark III was chosen for the Ford coupe while the Versailles name was chosen for the new luxury compact car, although it took ten years before it was used for a Lincoln model. However, in 1955, Ford had also sold in France a mid-line car named Versailles and from 1991 to 1997, in Brazil.
