Lincoln is the luxury car brand that’s always associated with the American presidents, indeed called as the presidential car. Its founder, Henry M. Leland named it from his longtime hero Abraham Lincoln, also a US president. In the phase of its growth, Lincoln Motor Company suffered from automakers’ worst nightmare, financial crisis. Consequently, Leland decided to sell the company to Ford Motor Company in 1922. Thus instead of existing in an independent entity, Lincoln became a marque of Ford in the Lincoln-Mercury division. So much so, Lincoln developed within the hands of its present owner.
Continental Mark is a series that has become the most important for Lincoln wherein Lincoln Mark III descended. It appeared in the industry in 1968 but was officially released as a personal luxury car in April 1969. Officially, Continental Mark III first appeared in 1958 under a Ford’s Continental division, which unluckily existed only for a very short period due to poor sales.
In the launching of Mark III, Lincoln ascended to the top level of personal luxury car market along with its rival El Dorado, ironically was a creation of Cadillac with which Lincoln’s founder is also among the founders. Its built was basically taken from the engineering of Ford Thunderbird. Their primary equipments were almost identical. The body however features are much bolder, its height and weight displays superior character, sleek body finish, rounded-off rectangular quarter panels, typical fake spare tire on the rear deck, and exclusive Lincoln grille. The design and devices were sumptuous with satisfying attributes which includes nice options such as air conditioner, leather upholstery, power seats, entertainment system, tinted glass, power locks, and cruise control. There’s also slip differential, anti-lock brakes, and automatic headlamp dimmer. Despite the fact that Lincoln Continental Mark III was priced higher than its competitor, it still hit good sales and was actually very competitive. In the first year, Mark III broke 30,858 units, lowered in the following years, but considerable enough for a short-lived model. Having Continental Mark III in production, Lincoln started the trailed remarkable existence of Lincoln Continental Mark series. Today, as one of the collector’s items, Lincoln Continental Mark III is priced at almost the same price as it was first introduced to the market
