Jeep Wagoneer
Jeep unveiled its latest wonder on November 14, 1962, the Jeep Wagoneer. It was marketed as a substitute for the Willys station wagon. It was entirely new in practically every aspect and directly aimed at the uniform motoring public. Jeep had earlier boarded on a wide-ranging research and engineering program with the intent of not only modernizing their vehicles but to contend with conventional car manufacturers. Originally obtainable as a two or four door wagon, in 2WD or 4WD, the Wagoneer stirred much interest with its new OHC 6 cylinder engine, modern styling and rugged good looks.
The Jeep Company depicts the Wagoneer as the first station wagon to offer complete passenger car styling, comfort and convenience in mixture with the rewards of a four wheel drive. The Wagoneer's looks preserved continuity with earlier Willys models with a plain, functional front end with the recognizable vertical grille. A spanking new look was accomplished by extending the outer edge of the fenders and hood forward enough to surround the grille and front lights. Mounted between single headlights were interior air intakes, and rectangular parking/directional lights were located directly below the headlights. A Jeep logo was placed in the lower right of the grille. The Wagoneer's angular wheel-well cutouts were suggestive of Jeep CJ styling.
