Sold from 1981 to 1986, the Jeep Scrambler was a small pickup truck built on a CJ chassis with a long rear overhang for increased cargo space. The Scrambler was a SUV before SUV spelled coolness. It had the go anywhere attitude of a Jeep with pickup truck usefulness. The many top configurations made it even more useful. Add a full hardtop and you have a modern day SUV. Add a full soft top and you have an extended ragtop with space for the family and gear. Add a half hardtop and you have a pickup. Add a half soft top and you have a ragtop pickup.
The Good news is Jeep is bringing the Scrambler back. To be released in July 2004 as a 2005 model, the new Scrambler promises a lot of things. Based on the old CJ and then the 1980s YJ, Jeep's mini-pickup was a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts due to its load hauling versatility. Wanting to satisfy the previous model's avid following Jeep is recreating a new CJ-8 based on its 2004 TJ, or TK architecture. Initially developed for military use overseas it is planned to be available for civilians.
