Isuzu, or Isuzu Motors Limited, is Japan's oldest existing vehicle manufacturer. Although the company name of Isuzu Motors Ltd wasn't used until 1949, the production and design of quality and high performance trucks started way back in 1916 through the joint ventures of Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas Industrial Co. In 1918, the company entered into a technical cooperation with Wolseley Motors U.K. to manufacture their first car, the Wolseley Model A-9. Two years later, they started manufacturing commercial trucks.
The 90 years of Isuzu existence was marked by change of company names and partnerships with different Japanese and International auto manufacturers and company. In 1933, the company was renamed Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. when it merged with Dot Automobile Manufacturing. It finally adopted the name Isuzu Motors Limited in 1949. In 1953, it again entered a technical cooperation with Rootes to produce the Hillman Minx passenger car. They also entered into a capital agreement with General Motors to produce the Gemini and eventually start its exports to the US. The company started exporting cars in the US in 1981 and ever since has produced a number of popular cars like the Rodeo, Axiom, Trooper and the current Ascender model.
