When the GMC Jimmy left the auto market in 1992, GMC introduced a new line of full-size sport utility vehicles, the GMC Yukon. It shares the same platform with the Chevrolet Tahoe and the earlier model, Chevrolet Suburban. Through the years, the Yukon underwent many changes and upgrading. From the 2-door wagon, it has evolved to a larger 4-door SUV, a 4-wheel drive and the up-scale Denali trim. The engine line-up was also improved form the 5.7 L 210-hp gas V8 to the turbo diesel engine in 1994, a standard 250-hp V8 in 1996 and the powerful Vortec V8 engine that delivers a maximum of 335 horses and 375 lb-ft of torque.
Yukon model line-up includes five level trims: the base Yukon, Yukon XL ½-ton, Yukon XL ¾-ton, Yukon Denali and Yukon XL Denali. All Yukon vehicles boast of its combined power, agility, refinement and luxury. Even the 9-seater Yukon base model, powered by a 295-hp Vortec 4800 engine, can tow up to 8,400 lbs. It provides enough cargo space and state-of-the-art standard parts and components that include a navigation system, a power sliding sunroof, a satellite radio with 130 digital channels and a DVD player. Higher trims provide more cargo space and more towing power. The Yukon XL ¾-ton delivers outstanding towing capability, pulling a 12,000-lb load without difficulty.
