GMC is the truck division of General Motors. It has been producing light and full-size pickups and sport-utility vehicles as early as 1902. Through the years, GMC has produced several truck models that had become a part of most Americans’ daily life. Like other GM makes, GMC shares its engines and platforms with other models. The GMC Jimmy, which was one of the early compact SUVs created by GM, shared its main features with the Chevrolet Blazer. Two and four-wheel drive models were available and the first models came with removable tops. A half-cab body got into the GMC Jimmy model line in 1976 and survived until Jimmy’s last year.

In 1983, GM introduced the GMC S15 for the 1983 GMC Jimmy model year along with its nearly identical model, the Chevrolet S10 Blazer. Except for the grille and some trim details, the GMC S15 Jimmy and the Chevy S10 models were similar. The GMC S15 and the S10 both carried a 2.5 L 4-cylinder engine and 2.8 L or 4.3 L V6 engines. The short-bed regular cab S15s and the extended cab models both have 6 ft cargo bed. The short cab sat on a 108.3-inch wheelbase while the extended cab on a 122.9-inch wheelbase. On its last year, a four-door Jimmy S15 was added to the Jimmy models. It got a longer wheelbase that offered better ride quality.

The 1991 S15 offered a decent interior both for the passengers and the cargo. Front bucket seats were standard on all models while a 2-place rear bench with folding seatback was optional. A new and most powerful 4.3 L 160-hp V6 engine was available for this year. Among the standard components provided for the last Jimmy S15 pickup are antilock rear brakes, power steering on 2WDs, automatic-locking front hubs and shift-on-the-fly. With its heavy duty components and excellent fit and finish, the S15 was at par with other top-rated SUVs.
