General Motors’ GMC and Chevrolet nearly identical full-size pickups were called C/K pickups. The “C” models were two-wheel drive pickups while the “K” models were four-wheel drive pickups. The 1962 C/Ks were available in base and custom trims and in two versions: the Wideside and the Fenderside. Four models were offered: the ½-ton short-bed C/K10, long-bed C/K15, ¾-ton C/K20 and 1-ton C30 models. Changes made to the late 60s and early 70s model were mostly on the engine line-up. The shorter wheelbase K5 Blazer was introduced as a utility variant in 1967.
A crew cab with super long 164.5 in wheelbase got into the GMC C/K model line up in 1973 while the rest of the C/K trucks were made longer. An all-wheel drive system was added as an option for this year. Two other important changes for this year’s C/K trucks were the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trims. In 1987, the “C” and “K” names were changed to “R” and “V”, respectively, but were brought back the following year for the GMT400 design. However, the R/V names were retained by the crew cabs and SUVs until 1991.
Both GMC and Chevrolet introduced a redesigned the pickup trucks in 1999, although older designs were continuously sold in the market. The GMC Sierra and other GMC pickup models got their own front-end sheetmetal and a longer wheelbase. Today’s GMC Sierra was upgraded to suit the users’ growing needs and lifestyles. A new flagship body style, a more potent V8 engine and the first of its kind gas-electric hybrid system are among the 2005 GMC Sierra highlights. The gas-electric hybrid provides 10% more fuel efficiency, making it the best fuel economy full-size pickup among its counterparts.
