The Caballero is GMC’s version of the Chevrolet El Camino. Both models are car-based small pickup trucks, produced from the 1960s until late 1980s by General Motors. As light trucks, they have lesser towing capacity than full-size pickups. However, these vehicles are so versatile that they can go as personal or company cars. They are also perfect for light-load hauling and delivery functions. The 1978 GMC Caballero has 800 lb payload capacity and its pickup box can handle 4X8 panels with the tailgate down. This capacity is adequate enough for a working vehicle of its class.
Offered for 1978 GMC Caballero are three models: the base Caballero, Caballero Laredo and the Diablo. Power is supplied by a 3.3 L V6 engine coupled with a standard manual transmission. Models marketed in California, which carried a 231 CID V6 engine, were equipped with a standard automatic transmission. Also available are 305 CID and 350 CID V8 engines matched with either 4-speed manual or automatic transmission. Aside from its respectable and dependable powertain, GMC Caballero also takes pride of its smart and youthful exterior body design that was definitely head-turners. Highlighting its modish body styling are its handsome grille and rectangular headlamps.
GMC Caballero affords clear visibility with its wide windshield, side quarter windows and uniquely designed wraparound rear window. Its well-appointed cab features a padded instrument panel where the A/C, radio and heater/defroster controls are neatly positioned. Passengers comfortably seat on the standard split bench with full-foam padded cushion and backrest. The sizeable cargo area behind the front seat is ideal for storing items when the vehicle is locked. A vinyl roof and tonneau cover is provided to protect the cargo area when not used. Its snap-on design makes it easy to install and remove.
