The Ford Fiesta was a certified best seller for Ford and is actually one of the most successful car brands that Ford has produced. For six distinct generations of the car, an estimated amount of ten million has been sold since it was introduced. Despite this popularity and success, it seems that only a few Americans know what the Ford Fiesta is. And those few Americans who know the car know only of its first generation.

The Ford Fiesta was indeed a successful car up to this day, but it was sold in America for barely three years. Another reason why the car is not popular is that this three years of existence happened way back in the late 1970s. The Ford Fiesta was sold in America from 1978 to 1980.

The Ford Fiesta was manufactured by Ford as an answer to consumers’ demand for small and compact cars, a demand which was largely imposed by the energy crisis of 1973. It was actually a product of the “Bobcat” project that Ford had undergone to answer these demands. It was also aimed at competing with rival small cars like the Fiat 127 and the Renault 5.

The Ford Fiesta was introduced in 1976. After nearly 30 years and six generations of the car, it is still being sold today all over the world. For North America, however, the Ford Fiesta was sold only from1978 to 1980; and as far as Americans are concerned, there is only one generation of the Ford Fiesta, the Ford Fiesta Mark I.

The version of the Ford Fiesta that was sold in North America was introduced in three basic trims: base, Ghia and S trims. Van models were also sold for those three short years. Three engine options were available upon introduction, which includes a 950cc unit, 1.1 liter unit and 1.3 liter unit of petrol engines. A 1.3 Supersport trim was introduced for the 1980 model year, which was also the last year of the Ford Fiesta in North America.

The rest of the world have seen a lot more of better and newer Ford Fiesta cars but North America only see one generation of the car.
