Inspired by the success of the Ford Mondeo in Europe, Ford decided to create a similar model to be sold in North America. The replica was named the Ford Contour and in its more luxurious form, it is called the Mercury Mystique. The Ford Contour, however, was less equipped, and compared to the Ford Mondeo, the Contour didn’t sold quite as well.

The Ford Contour was a four-door compact sedan manufactured and sold by Ford from 1996 to 2000 model years. The car was aimed to compete with the Honda Accord and other Japanese compact car rivals. It is categorically sized between the smaller Ford Escort and the larger Ford Taurus.

When introduced in 1996, the Ford Contour came in GL, LX and SE trim levels. A lower-priced base trim was introduced in 1997 and a high-performance SVT trim in 1998. Except for the SE and SVT, all trims were equipped with a 125 hp 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine. The SE was equipped with a 170 hp 2.5 liter V6 while the SVT was equipped with a similar engine producing 195 hp of power. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard for all trims while a 4-speed automatic is available as an option.

The Ford Contour didn’t last long in the market. From 1998, the base and GL trims were no longer manufactured and by 2000, only a Sport model (a renamed SE model) was available. The SVT trim was also available in 2000 but only at select Ford dealers.

Like the Ford Mondeo, the Ford Contour has something to boast about its performance. With the V6 engine, the car would accelerate quickly. It also showcases an impressive steering and handling capability and a well-designed 4-speed automatic transmission unit. A competitive rival to most of compact sedans during its time, many wondered why Ford immediately dropped the Ford Contour in its line-up.
