It was depicted as “Ford’s newest bright idea” and the Ford Torino proved that such description was correct. It was aimed to be a performance car and it was indeed. In fact, the Ford Torino became Ford’s base entry to the NASCAR car races.

The Ford Torino was manufactured by Ford from 1968 up to 1976. It was a mid-size car that was quite large in present standards, but smaller than the full-size Ford Galaxie. It was supposed to replace the Ford Fairlane in the mid-size car line-up but the latter was still sold by Ford until 1971.

Upon introduction, the Ford Torino was available in a number of body styles: two-door fastback hardtop, four-door sedan, four-door station wagon, and two-door convertible. Base trims were equipped with a 4.9 liter small block V8 while higher trims, like the sporty Torino GT, were equipped with a big block 6.4 liter V8. More high performance models were introduced in succeeding years to serve as entries to the NASCAR races, starting with the Torino Cobra and Torino Talladega in 1969. By 1970, new engine options were introduced to further boost performance. Trims with these new engine options were named as the Thunder Jet, Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet.

The popularity of the Ford Torino began to decline in the 1970s as high emission controls and fuel economy standards took its toll on the car. The 1973 oil crisis affected the design of the Ford Torino as well as the choice of car buyers. The car was finally dropped by Ford in its model line-up in 1976 and was replaced by the ford LTD.

The Ford Torino was indeed a high performance car, equipped with powerful and high performance engine. But the car is old, being last manufactured in 1976. If you still want to drive the car and feel once again it top rated performance, you must give it a thorough restoration job.
