The Ford Tempo is a car hardly known by car enthusiasts nowadays, save the passionate car collectors who would like to have just about any kind of car. But the Ford Tempo had its popular days in the car market. It may not have been as great or popular as the other Ford sedans, or its rival Japanese sedans for that matter, the Ford Tempo had its glory days when it can virtually compete with leading sedans like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord.

The Ford Tempo is a compact car manufactured and sold by Ford from 1984 to 1994. It was also sold in other countries like Canada, Mexico and some European countries where its size fitted in the mid-size category. It was introduced together with its twin model, the Mercury Topaz.

The Ford Tempo, together with the Mercury Topaz, was introduced to replace the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr pair. The car did not become an instant hit in the car market and neither did it become a bestseller. Its revolutionary design, however, became the basis of a Ford bestseller, the Ford Tempo. Poor sales, triggered by its outdated technology and poor cosmetic styling, led to its demise in 1994. The car was replaced by the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique for the 1995 model year.

The Ford Tempo was sold in 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan body styles. It was a front-wheel drive mid-size car that came in three trims: GL, GLS and LX. Base engine for all trims was a 2.3 liter I4 that outputs an average of 98 hp. A similar engine that is rated at 100 hp is also available as an option along with a Mazda designed 2.0 liter I4. An optional 3.0 liter V6 engine rated at 130 hp also appeared as an option from 1992 to 1994. All models are equipped with either a five-speed manual transaxle or a three-speed automatic transmission unit.

The Ford Tempo is known to perform adequately, but it can hardly match the performance of the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord, its chief rivals. Engine performance is meager, with only the V6 unit standing out. The 4-cylinder engine is extremely noisy and would not give you a quick acceleration. Controls are also poorly located and interior space is barely enough for a comfortable ride.

With such a low price, however, the Ford Tempo is definitely worth a look. This probably has made the car as one of the top five selling sedans in North America. It also has some features to boast, like its V6 engine and the easy to use AWD system, although these features are limited only to a few models.

Hardly can one find a Ford Tempo running on the American streets today. And you'll also find it hard to look for Ford Tempo parts. The lack of market for their products deterred Ford Tempo part manufacturers from producing a lot of these auto parts. Here at Parts Train, we strive to provide every Ford Tempo owners the parts they need to restore or repair their car.
