The Ford LTD nameplate was used by Ford on two entirely different cars. One was manufactured and sold in Australia. The other was manufactured and marketed in North America. Although different from each other, both shared a common characteristic—luxury. While the Ford LTD of Australia was introduced as a luxury version of a previous car, the Ford LTD of America was introduced as a luxury trim of another car.

The LTD nameplate was introduced by Ford in 1965 not as a new model line-up of cars but as the luxury trim of the Ford Galaxie 500. It became a separate model only two years after and finally replaced the Ford Galaxie when the latter was dropped from Ford's model line-up in 1974.

In 1977, the name was split to denote two cars: the standard Ford LTD would be used to name the original line-up of full-size cars, while a smaller Ford LTD II would refer to a re-bodied version of the Ford Torino. This arrangement continued for another year until the standard Ford LTD was redesigned.

In 1979, a new and downsized Ford LTD was introduced, this time based on the Ford Panther platform. This new body design gave rise to the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, which later became a separate model line-up and replaced the Ford LTD in 1992.

From 1965 until it was last manufactured in 1991, the Ford LTD took many forms and body styles. First marketed as a full-size sedan, the nameplate was moved to the mid-size category when it took the Ford Fox body platform. It was also sold on various body styles like sedans, wagons, coupes and convertibles. A limousine version also appeared in 1966, although Ford LTD with such body styles is now rare and collectible.

The Ford LTD lasted for quite a long time and had been one of the bestsellers on some years when it was still being marketed. This only proves that the Ford LTD performed well during its time.
