Ford called it the minivan for the next generation and billed it as the “All New” Ford Freestar. Some, however, claims that there is nothing new to the design of the new minivan and it is only a renamed version of an older Ford minivan. The Ford Freestar was introduced by Ford in 2004, replacing the old and long overdue Ford Windstar. It was introduced with the more luxurious Mercury Monterey, which is basically the same as the Freestar except for a few more features.
The Ford Freestar was basically the same vehicle as the Ford Windstar it replaced. Many would claim that the Ford Freestar is but a renamed and upgraded Ford Windstar. Nonetheless, the new Ford minivan presents a few more equipments and features that makes it a better minivan compared to its predecessor.
Current models of the Ford Freestar are available in five trim levels, namely the S, SE, SES, SEL and Limited trim levels. Standard engine for the S, SE and SES trim is a 3.9 liter V6 engine that outputs 193 hp of power and 240 lb-ft of torque. The upper SEL and Limited trims are equipped with a more powerful and larger 4.2 liter V6 engine, by far the largest ever used in a minivan. This other engine outputs power rated at 201 hp and a torque of 263 lb-ft. Standard transmission unit for both engines is a 4-speed automatic shift.
By its look, one could easily mistake it for the old Ford Windstar, but if you take a look on its interior and its performance, you can say that it is a whole new vehicle. If it is indeed just an upgrade of the Windstar, then we can say that Ford have made a great and successful upgrade to make it as capable and versatile as the new Ford Freestar.
