At a time when large vehicles were slowly becoming unpopular and its sales of it were slowly going down, Ford, as well as the other big American car manufacturers, has decided to create a small car of their own. For Chrysler, it was the Valiant; for GM, it was the Chevrolet Corvair; and for Ford, it was the Ford Falcon. These cars were aimed to compete with the popular European small cars at that time and the Ford Falcon claimed most of the success on the new category.

The Ford Falcon was a compact car by American standards, although it was considered a mid-size car on other countries. When it was introduced in 1960, it was available as a 2-door and 4-door sedan, 2-door and 4-door station wagons and a car-based pickup called the Ranchero. Several other body styles emerged in succeeding production years like hard tops and convertibles.

The stock engine upon introduction was a 2.4 liter 90 hp inline-six engine. A year later, a 2.8 liter engine was introduced together with to new models. A 4.3 liter V8 engine also emerged in the middle of 1963 and became the Falcon's largest and most powerful engine.

The Ford Falcon was an instant bestseller when it was introduced in 1960. After a year in the market, sales reached over a million and closed to over a million on its second year. Its popularity enthused Ford to create models with similar designs. In 1964, Ford launched its most popular derivative, the more futuristic and fresh looking Ford Mustang. Unluckily, the same car overshadowed the Ford Falcon and slowly killed it to its eventual end in 1971.

Considering that the Ford Mustang was basically designed after the Ford Falcon only means that the Ford Falcon is an equally capable and powerful car. The main advantage, maybe, that the Mustang had over the Falcon is its styling. Aside from that, there's no more.
