It is known by many as the police car of the 1990s, although an older batch of people would describe it differently. But as far as this generation is concerned, the Ford Crown Victoria is a police car. In fact, about 90 percent of the total police cars in North America are Ford Crown Victorias.

Actually, there were two different vehicles manufactured by Ford that had the name of Crown Victoria, although if you'll have to look closely on the current generation of the said vehicle, you can safely say three. The first Ford Crown Victoria was a unique 2-door 6-seater coupe that first appeared in 1955 but did not outlast the 1950s. The present Ford Crow Victoria traces its roots to the second of these vehicles which was introduced in 1979.

The first generation of the current Ford Crown Victoria was introduced in 1979 as a deluxe version of the LTD line of cars based on the Ford Panther platform. It was a line of full size cars that came in sedan, coupe and wagon body forms. The cars took different engines, although the most common was a 5.0 liter V8. All were equipped with automatic transmission.

The batch of Ford Crown Victorias that looks similar to what we have now was introduced mid-year of 1992 after the entire LTD line-up was dropped by Ford. The car looked rounder and came equipped with a 4.6 liter modular engine.

The current Ford Crown Victoria looks much like the 1992 model. In fact, it didn't get much change in style and mechanical design since 1992. It still has front independent suspensions with rear axle on a body-on-frame design. The car also continues to be a rear wheel drive. Current models are equipped with a 4.6 liter V8 engine coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Although many controversies and issues have been thrown to the Ford Crown Victoria, overall rating for the car has been good. The most frequent problem with the car is a tank leak caused by collisions, although such incidents would rarely happen.
