The Ford Motor Company is certainly one of the best automobile manufacturers in the world. Not only has it ranked third in the list of largest carmakers in terms of production output, it also has several automobile brands/products such as Lincoln, Jaguar, and Mercury among others under its control and supervision including a controlling share of the Mazda Motor Corporation. Ford-branded automobiles started with the very first model called Model A, followed by Model T and so on. It also came to produce some of the automobile industry's most exciting and well-admired models such as the such as the Ford Taurus, Cortina, Escape, Aerostar, Bronco, Capri, Country Squire, Courier, Crown Victoria, E-Series, Escort, Expedition, Explorer, F-Series, Falcon, Focus, Galaxie, Galaxy, Taurus, Zephyr and many others.
In 1949, Ford introduced a full-size, 9-seater station wagon called Country Squire. Same with the Ford Country Sedan, it was also based on the full-size vehicle lineup of Ford that was offered every year. It was primarily based on the Customline from 1949 until 1954, and the Fairlane until 1958, the Galaxie through 1966, and LTD/LTD Crown Victoria up to 1991. It was considered as the premium station wagon in the Ford range. Its most distinguishable feature is the imitation-actual wood trim on the doors as well as on the tailgate until 1955. After which, the actual wood framing was replaced with fiberglass and the rest with plastic appliqué. It also featured unique side-facing seats in the cargo area. The Country Squire was discontinued in 1991.
Like the Country Sedan, the Country Squire also featured advancement in the rear gate assembly. From the two-piece tailgate assembly, the tailgate was transformed in 1961 into a tailgate assembly that features a self-storing window for easy rolling down into the gate either through a crank from the outside, or by an electrical motor operated by the key or interior switch. If the old tailgate requires someone to lift the rear window up and have it locked in place through a mechanical support, the new design displays a safety lockout measure that allows the rear window to be fully withdrawn before it could be dropped. Moreover, Ford station wagons highlighted the use of Magic Door Gate for varying preferences of users. Such door gate can either function as the traditional type capable of being lowered down, or one that can be swung outward for easier access to the seating area.
