It was in the year 1903 when the Ford Motor Company was established by a person named Henry Ford. After a century, Ford has become one of the largest car manufacturers, actually third, in the world following General Motors and Toyota. Since then, Ford has come up with some of the greatest car models such as the Ford Mustang, GT, Escape, Explorer and Expedition. However, way back 1960s, there was another model that was introduced and gradually gained admiration and popularity in the car market – the Ford E-Series. But before the name E-Series became famous, it was first called as the Ford Econoline or Ford Club Wagon.
The Ford Club Wagon is a fleet of full-size cargo and passenger vans. It is equipped with a truck chassis because it was actually associated with the Ford’s F-Series line of pick up trucks. The first generation Club Wagons are those that were produced from 1961 until 1967. It was patterned after the compact Ford Falcon which was designed to compete with Chevrolet’s Corvair Sportan and Volkswagen’s Type 2 models. It had a flat front end and the engine was positioned between and at the back of the front seats. Notable feature for it was the Bell Telephone System which helped in paving the vehicle’s success.
The second generation Club Wagons was produced from 1968 until 1974. It had some changes such as moving the engine into the front inside a short hood, and a Twin I-Beam front suspension in addition with the use of V8 engine. For the third generation Club Wagons, produced from 1975 through 1991, it had more ergonomic controls and a complete frame, and a hood for the front end that is akin to what see now. Other transitional changes included square headlights and fresh logo. Present generation Club Wagons were called E-Series which sports either 4.9-liter I6, 5.0-liter V8, 5.8-liter V8, 7.5-liter V8 or a 7.3-liter Powerstroke Diesel V8 engine. Further, its design became more aerodynamic and the taillight lens was different from the F-Series. Other significant modifications were also employed.
