When you talk about Italian car manufacturers, the name Fiat Group or Fiat S.p.A. would be the one that will stand above the rest. Being the largest carmaker in Italy, Fiat has the following range of cars under its production: Panda, Punto, Stilo, Idea, Croma, Ulysse and Doblo. Fiat Group also owns the famous Formula 1 automobile maker Ferrari, although the latter still runs separately. For the Fiat Auto car company, the following firms are under its control and supervision: Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Maserati. Moreover, the Fiat has won the most number of European Car of the Year awards in 4 decades particularly the Fiat 128 model in 1970.
The Fiat 128 is a small family car that was introduced in 1969. It was offered in three body styles - as 2- or 4-door sedan, as hatchback, and as coupe. It displays unique and outstanding design. For the initial production of the front-wheel drive Fiat 128, automobiles had the powerplant transversely mounted at the front portion of the vehicle. Distinguishing feature of this model is the use of unequal length drive shafts, which makes it possible for the engine to be placed right beside the gearbox – a layout design that is perfect for compact packaging of small cars like the Fiat 128.
The Fiat 128 was commended by various car enthusiasts, experts, groups and media. The Road & Track magazine acclaimed the 128 for being a driver’s car that offers reliable brakes and excellent handling. It has also received the European Car of the Year award for 1970. In 1972, the first hatchback version to highlight such drivetrain layout was the Fiat 128 3P. However, when Volkswagen also launched the Golf, its own version of that type of vehicle in 1974, it became more successful and more popular than the 3P. Moreover, the Fiat 128 was the original car to offer an all-new Fiat SOHC engine with aluminum alloy cylinder head and a direct overhead camshaft driven by a rubber-toothed belt.
Through the years of production, the 128 underwent some modifications, upgrades and different trims such as the Rally Edition, Sport Coupe and 3P. Although Fiat 128s, except for the base 1100cc-powered model, were no longer produced in 1979, it was only in 1985 when the 128 production was totally discontinued. Therefore, if you are looking for quality made parts and accessories of your beloved Fiat 128 then you have just come to the right place.
