For some time now, Fiat Group or Fiat S.p.A. has successfully unveiled and produced some of the automobile industry’s most impressive car models. In fact, this Italian car manufacturer had already received several “European Car of the Year” awards, with the Fiat 124 winning the first of these eleven awards in 1967. What makes the Fiat 124 such a notable automobile was the way it was launched – being dropped by a parachute from a plane. It was indeed among the most spectacular automobile introduction of all time. Moreover, the Fiat 124 was commended for its outstanding features especially it having a spacious interior, advanced coil spring rear suspension technology, disc brakes, and lightweight body. A stretched and more luxurious version of the 124 called 125 was also launched in 1967.
The Fiat 124 was a replacement of the discontinued Fiat 1300 and Fiat 1500. Available powerplant for the 124 is 1.2-liter Fiat OGV staright-4 engine that is capable of generating 65 horsepower and 70-ft.lbf torque. Notwithstanding its not so good performance, the 124 still gained various acclamations from a number of car enthusiasts, experts, groups and magazines such as the Road & Track. In 1970’s, Sport Spider and Coupe versions of the 124 were also offered. The Spiders had an uncommon design styling. It was not equipped with bumper uprights, employed clear front turn signal lenses and headlamps, and the heater control was found underside the dash in a horizontal style as compared to the usual inside the center console.
Although the 124 had several automotive technological advancements, it was still not enough to last its production for a longer period. The Fiat 124 was replaced by the Fiat 131 upon its discontinuation in 1974. The Fiat 124 had similar versions being launched in other parts of the world. In 1970, the AutoVAZ car factory, sponsored by Fiat, spawned the LADA BA3-2101 / Zhiguli, which later on became Lada Riva. Such model was continuously produced until 1984. In Indian market, the Premier Automobiles introduced another Fiat 124 twin called Premier 118NE in 1986 displaying some minor modifications. It was discontinued in 1999. In addition, the Spanish, Bulgarian and Turkish markets also introduced Fiat 124 twins called SEAT 124 (1968-1976), Pirin-Fiat (1967-1971) and Murat 124 respectively.
