The Fiat Group or Fiat S.p.A. is an Italian automobile manufacturer (largest in Italy) responsible for the introduction and production of some famous and outstanding car models in the automobile industry. It produces a range of vehicles including the marques of Fiat Panda, Punto, Stilo, Ide Croma Ulysse and Doblo. Fiat’s subsidiary car companies include Fiat Auto and Ferrari, with the Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Maserati being added in the list. The Fiat Group already received eleven “European Car of the Year” awards. Some of which are the 1967 Fiat 124, 1970 Fiat 128, 1980 Lancia Delta, 1996 Fiat Bravo/Brava, 2001 Alfa Romeo 147 and the 2004 Fiat Panda.
In 1939, Fiat launched the Fiat 1100 model as a fresh and upgraded version of the 1932 Fiat 508 “Balilla”. The Fiat 1100’s real name was 508C. It looks like the 1936 Fiat 500 Topolino and Fiat 1500. Popular during the late 1930s is the heart shaped front grill, which the 1100 model also displayed. After some minor changes, specifically the redesign of its front end (nose), the original Fiat 1100 had restructured window-shaped louvers. It was then named as the 1100B or popularly called as “1100 musone” for big nose. After the war in 1949, Fiat 1100B was produced and marketed having the curvy trunk on the backside; was renamed as the 1100E.
The Fiat 1100 was drastically reworked to be a compact 4-door sedan for 1953. Such rework included the use of a modern unibody style with built-in front lights. It was then called as the “1100/103” and was available in two versions – the “economica” which means cheaper, and the “normale” which means standard and offered more optional features. Car enthusiasts showed great appreciation when the sporty version of the Fiat 1100/103 called 1100 TV featuring a third light at the middle of the fore plate, and the station wagon version featuring a fifth door right at the square tail, were introduced.
In 1956, the Fiat 1100 underwent again some changes in fittings and details; and for 1959, the use of fintails and wider windows gave the vehicle another name as the 1100 “Granluce” which means great illumination. In 1962, the third generation Fiat 1100 was introduced. Changes and redesigns continued until 1969, when the Fiat 1100 was finally replaced by the new middle-class Fiat 128.
