Competent and comfortable, the Eagle Summit is a good example of a small Japanese car. But many may wonder as to how a car with an American name can be called a Japanese car. The Eagle Summit was surely marketed in America by Chrysler and it wasn’t even sold in Japan.

The Eagle Summit is a small, compact line of cars manufactured and sold by Chrysler from 1989 to 1996. Its body designs were based on the Plymouth/Dodge Colt, a car marketed by Chrysler since the 1970s but was actually manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors of Japan. Just like the Colt, the Eagle Summit was also made in Japan. It was an entry level twin to the Mitsubishi Mirage.

When introduced in 1989, the Eagle Summit was only available as a sedan. It was available in three different trims: base, DL, and LX. All were equipped with a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that outputs 81 hp of power. A 5-speed manual shift was standard for all trims while 4-speed and 3-speed automatic options are both available.

Other body styles were introduced for the Eagle Summit in the succeeding years. A hatchback was introduced in 1991 but was replaced shortly by a coupe after the 1993 major redesign. In its last year in the market, it was available in four designs: DL and ESi 2-door coupes and LX and ESi 4-door sedans. Engine options include a more powerful 1.5 liter 4-cylinder engine for the coupes and a 1.8 liter 113 hp 4-cylinder engine for the sedans. The 5-speed manual transmission continued to be the standard while a 4-speed and 3-speed automatic were available as options.

When it was still in production, the Eagle Summit was praised for its competence and comfort. It cannot match the performance of either Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, especially in acceleration, but with its low sticker price, it is definitely a worthy buy.

The Eagle Summit is extremely reliable so it is not exactly a surprise if there are still people driving the car today.
