A car manufactured by a foreign car manufacturer but sold in the US under the name or by another manufacturer is often called a captive import. On the other hand, a car manufactured by a certain division of a company or a local partner of such company and sold with another name is called a rebadged version of the said car. The Eagle Premier would not fall under these two definitions but it may categorically fall in between the two.

The Eagle Premier is a large sedan mass produced and sold by Chrysler from 1988 to 1992. It was available in two trims: the LX trim and the ES trim. The LX trim was equipped with a 2.5 liter inline-type 4-cylinder AMC engine while the ES trim was equipped with a 3.0 liter PRV V6 engine. The car was also sold as the Dodge Monaco from 1990 to 1992.

The car was based on the design of the Renault 25 and must have been sold by Renault as the Renault Premier if AMC was not acquired by Chrysler in 1987. Actually, a few cars bearing the Renault Premier name were sold before AMC was acquired by Chrysler. Under Chrysler, however, the design of the car was largely restyled by Giorgetto Giugiaro and the result became what was sold as the Eagle Premier.

The Eagle Premier must have been the best and most popular Eagle car ever manufactured under the Chrysler Corporation. The design of the Eagle was in fact better than most of the cars manufactured locally by Chrysler during that period. This became the reason why the Dodge Monaco took the design of the Eagle Premier rather than the Dodge Dynasty, which was then considered a less reliable car.

Basically, the Eagle Premier was a reliable and capable car. But like other Eagle cars, it was easily overshadowed by its corporate twins and other Chrysler cars that used the same body style. Poor product recognition, and not poor quality, led to the Eagle Premier’s downfall. It was hurt further by poor marketing strategies made by Chrysler for the Eagle Premier.
