Dodge came up with the idea of the Dodge 880 so as no to catch-up Chevrolet and Ford’s plan of down-sizing their cars for 1962. Dodge had an emergency downsize program that resulted to a design that placed Dodge in an uncertain position with consumers of not offering a full-sized automobile.

The lack of time to develop an all new full size Dodge, Chrysler decided to combine full size body used by the Chrysler Newport and the non-letter 300 series. This endeavor had brought the name Dodge Custom 880 in the market which was available as either two or four door sedans, two and four-door hardtops, a two-door convertible and an option for six and nine passengers station wagons. All these designs sported the Chrysler’s hardtop styling.

For 1963, the Dodge Custom 880 was simply named the Dodge 880 with a new design that boosted the sales to 28,200 vehicles, of which 5,600 were station wagons. The new Dodge 880 sported restyled taillights, a new convex oval shaped grille, and Custom 880 and the new 880 scripts were marked on the front fenders aft of the headlights. The interior of the Dodge 880 are similar to Custom 880. Armrests on 880 series are more compact and the garnish molding is painted metal with single metal molding underneath the garnish area.

The 880 had the most significant and final redesign for the 1964 model year. It eliminated Chrysler’s styling cue of a panoramic rear window and carried an enhanced body contours with more contemporary roof line. Other notable changes were the style of the grille which was redesigned to a concave with a horizontal break that runs through the length of the grille’s housing and new wraparound rectangular taillights. All the Dodge 880s received a new instrument cluster layout. The year 1965 marked the last production year for Dodge 800 and overall design themes were expressed. The new image of Dodge was dominated by geometric angles, rectangular and trapezoidal shapes.
