Starting out as a humble mid-size car, the Dodge Stratus has provided the world with a reliable and affordable transportation. But it didn’t last that way, neither did Chrysler planned the car to stay forever that way. After 2000, people viewed the Dodge Stratus in a different manner. It had become a more competitive, more powerful and more capable car that can compete with its closest rivals like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Civic.

The Dodge Stratus was introduced in 1995 as a mid-size four-door sedan. It is similar to two other Chrysler cars, namely the Chrysler Cirrus and Plymouth Breeze, and was based on Chrysler’s JA platform. It was then available in two trims: base and ES. Standard engine for both trims is a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder unit coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission. Both trims are also available with either a 2.4 liter I4 or a 3.0 liter V6 coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission unit.

The Dodge Stratus received a major redesign in 2001. Its former JA platform was dropped to be replaced by the Chrysler JR platform. It also came in two body styles and three trims; a sedan body style available in either ES or SE trims and a coupe available in SE and R/T trims. Engine options for all trims include a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine, a 2.7 liter V6 and a 3.0 liter V6. Now much powerful, but also priced higher, the Dodge Stratus is capable in competing with other brands under its category.

Today, the Dodge Stratus is still available in two body styles, a sedan and a coupe, but now only available in two trim levels, SXT and R/T. A more equipped Special Edition Package is, however, available for both body styles. Engine options were still the same as well as the transmission units. The coupe body style would last only until 2005 while the entire model line-up is expected to be dropped in 2007.
