To create a new car market segment and dominate it; that must be what’s in the mind of DaimlerChrysler when it introduced the 2004 Dodge Magnum. And that must also be the same idea that entered Chrysler’s mind when they introduced a car with the same name way back in the late 1970s. If there is one thing in common with both the two cars, it is that they are unique in many ways.

The first Dodge Magnum produced by Chrysler was a large mid-size sedan that was introduced in 1978. It was actually a rebadged version of the Chrysler Cordoba. It is neither a muscle car nor a family sedan, but it goes somewhere in between the two cars. Chrysler claimed that the car was aimed for young men who have grown in the muscle car era but now needs a larger sedan for a family of their own. Because of poor sales, the Dodge Magnum was dropped a year later and was replaced by the Dodge Mirada.

Before 2004, DaimlerChrysler enthusiastically announced the return of the Dodge Magnum. The current Dodge Magnum was introduced in 2004 but it was a bit larger than a regular sedan, much larger than the old Dodge Magnum. Like the old Magnum, however, it was also uniquely designed with a body that is hard to classify. Its designers called the body a “sports tourer” and claimed that it would belong to a new car segment market, but the press would classify the car as a hybrid between a station wagon and a hatchback.

The current Dodge Magnum is available in three trims: SE, SXT and RT. The base SE is equipped with a 190 hp 2.7 liter V6 while the SXT trim comes standard with a 250 hp 3.5 liter V6. The premium RT trim comes with the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 engine. All three are equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission unit. For 2005, the SXT and RT trim would come optional with an all-wheel drive system.
