Shortly after the Dodge 400 K-Car was introduced by the Chrysler Corporation, it was immediately replaced by the Dodge 600 in 1984. But one may wonder what difference there really is between the Dodge 400 and Dodge 600. Why do they look very much the same, except for a few interior and exterior features?
The reason behind the similarity is the fact that the Dodge 400 and the Dodge 600 is actually the same car. First, both are patterned on the K-Car platform used by Chrysler for its cars in the mid 1980s. The Dodge 400 was renamed as the Dodge 600 in 1984 so that the car can be closely aligned with the larger E-body 600 sedan designed by the same company. There were a few feature updated made both inside and outside of the Dodge 600 to make it look different from its Dodge 400 predecessor.
Just like the older Dodge 400, the Dodge 600 was equipped with a standard 2.2 liter Trans-4 engine. A 2.2 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine was also added to the engine line-up as an option. Standard transmission is a 5-speed manual shift with overdrive.
Much like the Dodge 400 that it replaced, the Dodge 600 haven’t gained much popularity to last that long. It was produced and marketed by Chrysler from 1984 to 1989. In 1989, it was replaced by the Dodge Spirit, a car having the same K body, although less apparent this time.
