A member of M-body vehicle line, Fifth Avenue was Chrysler's largest models produced from 1979 to 1993 model years. This name was first used in 1979 model year by the Chrysler New Yorker sedan sub-model. Though smaller than the utmost size, the New Yorker Fifth Avenue edition is still motorized by a V8 and still a rear wheel drive. It comes with a leather-appointed interior and standard landau vinyl roof. This model was stayed in the market for three years until New Yorker was once again downsized in 1982.

The Fifth Avenue option was still offered until 1983, when it became a model in its own right. This vehicle was considered as the last V8, rear wheel drive Chrysler until the revision of Chrysler 300 in 2004. This new Fifth Avenue successful stayed in the market for six model years. In 1988, Fifth Avenue got its power from a 5.2L V8 teamed with Torqueflite automatic transmission. The cabin gained button-tufted, soft seats covered with either velvet or leather and a driver's side airbag was added.

In 1990, the Fifth Avenue joined the Extended K car line up. It is considered as the most lavish K vehicle as it comes with higher level of luxury, providing a sleeker and quieter ride. The Fifth Avenue now comes in longer platform and it received a slight revision in the door panels. The Fifth Avenue gained a facelift in 1992 that provides smoother lines and rounded front and rear fascias. It is offered with additional features and ornamentation update.
