In 1987 model year, the Chevrolet Corsica was originally produced as a 4 door sedan aimed to be a fleet rental vehicle. The following year, it became the second best-selling car in America, along with the Beretta. A four-door Corsica hatchback and a sporty LTZ equipped with features like that of the Beretta were added for model year 1989. The compact Corsica sedan and hatchback gained a more sedate audience.

In 1990, Corsica's original engines were replaced by a larger 2.2-liter four and 3.1-liter V6. And the enticing LTZ model received reclining front bucket seats with adjustable lumbar supports, gas-pressurized shock absorbers, quick-ratio power steering, stabilizer bars, and 15-inch tires. After a year, Corsica received a revamped interior and driver-side airbag. The sporty LTZ was dropped and was replaced by Z52 sport package. The 4-door notchback sedan and the 4-door hatchback are now available only in LT trim. 1991 Corsica also came with a new dashboard featuring a more modular grouping of ducts and controls. The production of Corsica 4-door hatchback trim ceased in 1992 while the remaining trim received a standard antilock braking. The 2.2-liter 4-cylinder powertrain gained a new fuel injection system that improved its output from 95 to 110 horsepower. Corsica's drivetrains were given more attention in 1994. The 4-cylinder engine received additional 10 horsepower and the new V6 mated with a new electronic 4-sped automatic transmission now gained 20 more horsepower. The Corsica takes pride in being the first American car to be outfitted with daytime running lights, along with revised rear suspension and larger tires. Chevrolet discontinued the Corsica and the Beretta after the 1996 model year. The Corsica was significantly replaced by 1997 Chevrolet Malibu.
