The Chrysler Corporation has used the Imperial nameplate ever since the corporation was established. And for most part of the corporation's history, the Imperial name was used to denote the most luxurious and, for some time, the high performance Chrysler vehicle trims and models. So luxurious was the Imperial that for some years in Chrysler's history, the Imperial was designated as a separate make of brand for Chrysler's luxury or prestige cars.

The Chrysler Imperial's history may be well arranged into periods, with each period signifying a separate generation of the car make and model. Chrysler first used the Imperial name as body styles or trim levels for their very first car, the Chrysler B-70. These body styles were the Imperial sedan and the Crown Imperial sedan. These body styles appeared only in 1925. A year after, the Chrysler Imperial became a Chrysler model of its own.

The first period in the Chrysler Imperial's history was termed as the 'Early Years'. This period, which lasted from 1926 to 1930, was when the Chrysler Imperial was introduced as a separate model and was aimed to compete with Cadillac and Lincoln in the luxury car market. Chrysler Imperials of this period were equipped with straight-six engines. The period that followed, from 1931 to 1933, was called the 'Classic Era' and Imperials of that period were equipped with straight-eight engines. From 1934 to 1936 were the 'Airflow Years', when the Chrysler Imperials were radically designed, with the Airflow Chrysler Imperial Eight being the most radically styled production model. From 1937 to 1954, there appeared various designs and styles for the Chrysler Imperial. Famous designers for these Imperial cars were Ray Dietrich and Virgil Exner.

From 1955, the Imperial was no longer a model for the Chrysler brand but a separate make or brand of its own. The Imperial name was then designated as Chrysler's brand for luxury or prestige cars that would better compete with the prestige brands of other manufacturers, like the Lincoln, Cadillac and others. It continued to be Chrysler's prestige brand until 1975, after which the Imperial name was dropped and was renamed the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. From 1981 to 1983, the Imperial name was used for a Chrysler J-body car, and from 1990 to 1993, the name was used for a Chrysler K-body car.

Whether the Imperial nameplate was used for a trim level, body style, vehicle model or vehicle brand, it always suggest one thing—luxury.
