Chevrolet Monza was originally created to provide a platform for the GM's Wankel engine but this project was not produced. So, the Chevrolet Monza rear wheel drive hatchback, coupe and wagon produced in 1975 through 1980 model years were just outfitted with conventional I4 and V8 engines. It shared its GM H platform with other models in other GM brands such as Starfire from Oldsmobile division, Sunbird produced by Pontiac and Skyhawk by Buick. The Monza 2+2 pride itself on winning the Motor Trend's Car of the Year award for 1975.
When it was introduced in 1975, Monza's original drivetrains were the 2300I4 and 262 V8 but in 1977 until 1979, Monza used just one powerhouse, the 305 V8. The 1980 model year was marked by the total abolition of the V8 engine in General Motor's H-Body platform. These H-body vehicles were replaced by J-body cars in 1981. But in Brazil, the J-body edition retain the Chevy Monza name and made it available in the market as a two-door or three-door fastback manufactured from 1982 through 1989. The Chevrolet department in Mexico also used the Monza name in a certain version of the Geo Metro.
Monza is available in various trim levels and Chevrolet also released Special edition vehicles. Spyders are trims of Chevrolet Monza released from 1976-1980.
