The Chevelle was Chevrolet's mid-size model vehicle manufactured throughout the 1960s and 70s. Launched in 1964, Chevrolet Chevelle became one of General Motors most successful models with versions that vary from cost-effective family cars to powerful coupes. The platform used in building Monte Carlo, another successful Chevrolet model, was Chevelle's chassis. The Chevrolet Chevelle SS marked Chevrolet's entry into the hot midsize muscle car competition. Known as Chevrolet Chevelle's high performance version, this car takes pride in having its own set of engine and performance equipment. Chevelle SS was at first less powerful with its initial power source, a 327 V8. So it was replaced by powerful 396 V8s and finally, Chevelle was equipped with the most powerful rated engine in the muscle car history, the LS6 454 in 1970.

In 1967 model year, Chevelle SS came with a host of enhancements. It gained more aggressive tires, new 14-inch wheels and new front disc brakes that boost its drivability and road manners. The styling was also slightly changed, adopting a new modified bumper and a new blackout tail panel. Another transmission, a three speed automatic was added to the available Chevelle transmissions including three and four speed manuals and two speed automatic transmissions. The 1970 model year was marked by the launching of the celebrated and the most powerful Chevelle SS of all time. In the following model year, 1971, the muscle car performance had ceased. To meet the very restraining emission standards, Chevrolet detuned all its engines and decided to produce two new level engines. Detuning of engines was also done as a response to General Motor's announcement that all engines should ran on unleaded fuel. 1973 was the final year of Chevelle SS. For this year, the Chevelle was redesigned entirely and the engines were further detuned. The Chevelle, together with Pontiac GTO remains as one of the most prominent cars produced in this period. Its remarkably strong performance and affordability made it famous on the pavement and at the track.
