Originally, the name STS or Seville Touring Sedan was already used during the production of the famous Cadillac Seville as an upscale performance-oriented version. In 1992, Cadillac formally used the STS name as a separate model from the less-performance oriented Seville Luxury Sedan or simply SLS. The Cadillac STS is a 4-door, full-size luxury sedan that was sold by General Motor's Cadillac brand starting 2005. It was manufactured to serve as a replacement to the discontinued "import fighter" Cadillac Seville in 2004. Some its competitors include the Acura RL, Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Infiniti M45, Lexus GS and Mercedes Benz CLS-Class.

The STS is based on the Sigma platform and closely related to the Cadillac CTS and SRX. Available powerplant for it is either a 3.6-liter LY7 V6 or a 4.6-liter Northstar LH2 V8 as compared to 1993 Seville's powerplant of then-new Northstar System powerplant with aluminum DOHC L37 V8 engine. The STS also replaced the front-wheel drive engine-transmission layout of Seville, and now features a rear-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive layouts. The STS is the first Cadillac sedan to use such kind of engine-transmission layout. As a full-size sedan, its wheelbase measures at 116.4 inches but ironically shorter than its mid-size predecessor in terms of overall length. Nevertheless, it has a great advantage regarding interior space over the Seville. The STS was also Cadillac's most expensive sedan model during its subsistence.
